xAI Built a Giant Battery in Memphis — But Its Diesel Generators Still Run Unpermitted
A massive battery at xAI's Memphis AI data centers could help stabilize the grid, but it doesn't resolve the unpermitted gas generators polluting nearby Black neighborhoods.
What happened: xAI has quietly installed a massive battery system at its Colossus AI data center hub in Memphis. The battery was approved for grid connection through a local utility program that lets the facility disconnect from the grid for up to four hours during peak demand, using its own stored power instead. At the same time, xAI has been running 69 temporary gas generators at its newer Colossus 2 site without air pollution permits, arguing they count as mobile equipment even though they operate in the same spot day after day.
Why it matters: The generators produce pollutants that fall hardest on nearby communities, including the majority-Black Whitehaven neighborhood, echoing an earlier fight in the Boxtown neighborhood near Colossus 1. The Southern Environmental Law Center has sued over the unpermitted pollution, and that case is still pending. Meanwhile, the battery shows how AI companies are using large-scale storage to get power-hungry data centers online fast, a pattern also playing out in Oregon and Minnesota.
How it works, plainly: Batteries store electricity when supply is plentiful and release it during demand spikes, like heat waves, without burning fuel. xAI's battery likely also smooths out sudden surges from AI computing loads so they don't damage equipment or strain the local grid. But it's unclear whether the battery will actually reduce reliance on the gas generators. In one possible setup, the battery could even be recharged by those same generators in an isolated microgrid, adding more emissions rather than cutting them.
The rollout: Tennessee Valley Authority, which supplies the region, says it wants more flexible power sources like batteries to complement its nuclear and coal plants and growing solar fleet. TVA has separately contracted a 200-megawatt battery in Alabama through normal channels, with completion expected by 2029. Officials suggest xAI's privately built battery could eventually be offered back to TVA as a paid grid resource, which could speed up battery deployment elsewhere in the region if the arrangement goes through.
