Google's AI leadership shuffles as DeepMind's CEO steps back and top researchers quit
Demis Hassabis is handing off DeepMind's day-to-day reins just as Jeff Dean and three other senior researchers leave to build their own AI-for-science startup.
What happened: Google DeepMind is getting a new boss. Demis Hassabis, who co-founded the lab and won a Nobel prize for AlphaFold, is stepping down as chief executive to become DeepMind's chair and Alphabet's chief scientist. Koray Kavukcuoglu, DeepMind's CTO, takes over day-to-day leadership as senior vice-president. On the same day, longtime Google engineer Jeff Dean announced he's leaving—along with fellow veterans Sanjay Ghemawat, Quoc Le, and Oriol Vinyals—to launch a startup called Discovery Loop, which aims to use AI to automate scientific experiments. Alphabet shares dropped 4%.
Why it matters: This is the biggest reshuffle yet inside the company widely seen as AI's most capable but slowest-moving giant. Google has kept pace with OpenAI and Anthropic on research but lags on shipping products fast, and insiders describe growing internal pressure to move quicker. Losing Dean, Google's 30th employee and a 27-year veteran, plus three other top researchers in one day, reads to many current and former employees as a sign of strain—even as executives frame it as a natural handoff.
The undercurrent: Multiple people close to the situation point to something less tidy than a routine reorg: friction over Google's deal letting the Pentagon use its AI for “any lawful use,” including possible surveillance or weapons applications. Dean and Hassabis both signed a 2018 pledge against letting machines decide to take a human life, and DeepMind was originally bought with a promise its tech wouldn't go to military or intelligence work. Employees and outside watchdogs suspect that tension contributed to both moves, though Google's public statements don't address it.
The rollout: Discovery Loop launches as a public benefit corporation backed by Radical Ventures, Khosla Ventures, Kleiner Perkins, Lightspeed, Doerr Capital—and Alphabet itself. It plans to run thousands of automated experiments in drug discovery, materials, and clean energy, and is also exploring AI that improves AI with less human oversight. Meanwhile, Hassabis keeps leading Isomorphic Labs and says he'll focus on steering artificial general intelligence safely; Kavukcuoglu now runs DeepMind's daily operations.
