XPeng starts mass-producing its humanoid robot on an automated line
The Chinese EV maker says its new Guangzhou line is over 80% automated, with the IRON robot walking off it under its own power ahead of a 2026 mass-production target.
What happened: XPeng switched on what it calls the world's first automated production line built specifically for advanced humanoid robots, at a facility in Guangzhou, China. Its IRON robot walked off that line under its own power, and the company says more than 80% of the line's core processes are automated. CEO He Xiaopeng clipped a staff badge onto IRON at the ceremony, a symbolic gesture meant to show the robot has moved from prototype to something closer to a real product. He called it 'a small step' toward building production lines for what he described as an entirely new category of product.
Why it matters: IRON went viral last November when its walk looked so human that XPeng had to cut open its leg on stage to prove no person was inside. Turning that demo into an actual manufacturing line is the part of humanoid robotics that has tripped up nearly everyone, including Tesla, whose Optimus program is still converting a car assembly line and hasn't shipped a robot doing useful work. XPeng's robotics unit also just raised over $900 million at a $6.3 billion valuation, the largest private funding round in China's embodied-AI sector, backed by IDG Capital, Tencent, and Alibaba.
How it works, plainly: IRON has 76 degrees of freedom across its body and 21 in each hand, covered by a flexible lattice structure XPeng treats as both skin and a safety layer. It runs on three of XPeng's own Turing AI chips, delivering up to 2,250 TOPS of computing power, enough, the company says, to run its Physical AI model directly on the robot rather than relying on a remote human operator. XPeng is applying the same automotive-grade quality systems it uses to build its electric cars to this new robot line, treating the robot as a manufacturing problem it has already partly solved once before.
The rollout: XPeng wants to build over 1,000 robots a month on the way to a million a year by 2030, but the near-term plan is smaller: mass production by the end of 2026, with early robots going into XPeng's own stores and offices, not customers. Commercial sales in China and abroad aren't scheduled until 2027. XPeng's claim that IRON's profit margin will beat its EVs is still just a claim. No robot has shipped to a paying customer, and every humanoid robot timeline across the industry, XPeng's included, has slipped before.
